Training from OSN > Frequently asked questions
Have you got a specific question about training for playwork? Don't hesitate to contact Lynda Ray, the OSN Training Manager on 0114 249 4941 - she's expecting you . . . . In the meantime, answers to some of our more frequently asked questions can be found below.
Q. What kind of courses does Sheffield OSN deliver?
A. We are always adding to the courses we offer, but current provision includes First Aid, Child Protection, Positive Behaviour, Food Hygiene and Health & Safety. New courses recently introduced include Liabilities Training for Management Committee Members and Children's Rights.
Q. Who teaches the courses?
A. Some courses are taught by our own experienced staff, whereas others are delivered by outside agencies, chosen by us for their skills and commitment to quality.
Q. What if I want to work towards a formal qualification?
A. The starting point for many people working in out of school settings - or wanting to get a job -is the Introduction to Playwork course. This seven-week course offers a basic grounding in all aspects of playwork.
Many people then go on to work towards an NVQ - National Vocational Qualification - in Playwork at Level 2 or 3. There are various ways of doing this. You can either come to OSN first to study the underpinning knowledge you need, before then moving on to a work-based assessment period. Alternatively, you can study the underpinning knowledge at the same time as being assessed in the workplace.
Q. Do you only offer training in Sheffield?
A. We are currently developing a regional training programme, sharing the expertise we have developed over a number of years with people from different areas. We can provide tailor-made courses on a range of subjects, including equal opportunities, child-centred play and team building.
Q. I am interested in moving into management - any suggestions?
A. A new NVQ Level 4 is available, which offers people the chance to develop management and business skills at the same time as improving their in depth understanding of playwork. Were also looking for people who already have levels 2 and 3 to train to become assessors.
Q. How do I pay?
A. There is a variety of ways in which training can be paid for. Many people studying for an NVQ will be eligible for sponsorship through the government's Learning Skills Council programme. When people take up a new job as a co-ordinator or deputy co-ordinator in an established club, OSN can help with sponsorship, as long as people are committed to achieving the qualification.
There is a small charge for other courses, which individuals either pay themselves, or, in some cases, their club will pay. There are three price bands, with cheaper rates for OSN members already working in clubs.
Q. We are working closely with other clubs in our area - can you organise joint training for us?
A. If more than one club wants to put on training for its staff, OSN can organise training to respond to their needs. Often it makes sense for clubs to link together - partly to keep costs down, but also to give them a chance to share good practice and learn from each other.
